About

Initiative for Sustaining Family Unity – IforSFU was formerly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria in December 2013 to provide specialized services to families, government agencies, religious groups, and educational institutions for the actualization of violence free families through counseling, training and referrals.

Vision

A society where the family unit is built on trust, mutual respect and responsibility for one another.

Mission

To provide qualitative services to members of society for the actualization of violence free families through counselling, trainings and referrals.

History

The vision for a violence free family life was borne out of a long desire to see members of families experience a peaceful and balanced life. This longing was as a result of personal experiences with family dysfunction and witnessing how this affects and impacts on members of the family differently.

In 1994, after a very personal experience, the first thoughts of working to build strong family units devoid of violence and abuse was conceived. This dream did not take form till some time in 1998/99 when clarity on what needs to be done came. No conscious efforts to establish an organisation was made, rather through the platform of the fellowship and church, the implementation of this mandate began to take shape. This was short lived as the fear of uncertainty fuelled by lack of training and resource led to relaxing the efforts at teaching and counseling young people on these issues.

In 2008 after joining a women’s rights organisation, the need to clarify the goals of this vision was re-ignited leading to steps being taken to establish what we now have as Initiative for Sustaining Family Unity.

While this is clearly a divine mandate, it holds relevance for the current state of the family today. With increase in spousal abuse and even murder, street children, child sexual abuse, pornography, addiction, there is no better time as now to speak up for family balance.

There is the increasing need to raise awareness on family dysfunction which has taken the most subtle forms, there is the need to engage with children who suffer the most from such dysfunction and to provide essential services to members of family who identify as being affected by one form of challenge or the other.

Men and women alike are affected by domestic violence, the larger extended family is affected by the outcomes of such violence. The society at large is a reflection of the dysfunction that exists in the families hence the need for IforSFu to work with partners to ensure that families remain a safe space for its members and the custodian of societal values that are transferable to generations yet unborn.
